T20 WORLD CUP 2012 SCHEDULE

Posted by anccricket on October 21, 2011 at 1:15 AM Comments comments (0)

T20 World Cup 2012 will begin on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 in Sri Lanka as per cricket schedule announced. ICC World Twenty20 2012 is an international tournament to be organized by Sri Lanka. T20 World Cup 2012 will consist of 27 Twenty20 matches to be hosted by Sri Lanka in Sep-Oct 2012. The T20 World Cup 2012 tournament is a part of Future Tour Programs prepared by International Cricket Council (ICC). Sri Lanka will host this tournament, beginning on September 18, 2012. In T20 World Cup 2012 bilateral series, first T20 match would be between Sri Lanka - Zimbabwe on Sep 18, 2012 at 19:30 local time to be played at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, Hambantota.

Twenty20 Cricket has never failed to enthrall and captivate the minds of cricketing viewers and spectators round the globe. Since its early days, T20 Cricket came under constant criticism. But with the unprecedented success of the inaugural edition of the International Twenty20 World Cup, all questions over the longevity of the shortest format of Cricket was put to rest once and for all. To globalize T20 Cricket throughout the globe, the International Cricket Council decided to host T20 World Cups every 2 years. The year 2012 will see the next edition of the World T20, to be played in the Asian country of Sri Lanka.

The Twenty20 World Cup 2012 is the 4th edition of the T20 World Cup. This international T20 cricketing event will be hosted by the island country of Sri Lanka. In fact, this is the first time that this grand tournament will be hosted by an Asian country. Although the official dates have not been announced by the ICC, the championship will start from early September 2012 and continue up to the last week of the same month. Just like all other cricket tournaments and series, the ICC World T20 Championship is a part of the innovative Future Tour Programs (FTP).

The ICC will release the official cricket fixture of the World T20 to the public and the media very soon, as assured by the officials at ICC. This year, the number of qualifying teams has been raised from 12 to 16. This implies, the minnows and the associate countries stand a chance to compete against the big teams and gain experience. For that, a qualifying round will be held in the first quarter of 2012. The first game of the ICC T20 World Championship 2012 will be underway from Monday, September 12, 2012.

The matches will be held in Galle, Kandy and Colombo. The finals, though, will be held at the legendary R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. It is one of the magnificent cricketing venues of the modern age. In the distant past, it has been witness to great cricketing spectacles, including quarter finals and semi finals of Cricket World Cup 2011 and 1996. Also, it would be interesting to see whether an Asian country will host the cup, or will it be a new name to lift up the coveted T20 World Championship crown. It’s just a matter of time, before the winner is exposed to the cricketing fraternity.

Champions League Cricket Schedule 2011

Posted by anccricket on September 24, 2011 at 2:25 AM Comments comments (0)

The Champions League Twenty20 2011 comes with a twist in that there is the precursor of the Champions League Twenty20 2011 qualifier tournament, the schedule for which was recently announced.

Slated for the 19th to 21st of September, the CLT20 2011 Qualifier will allow three of the six participating teams to move further to the CLT20 2011 main draw. While England have yet to finalize the Twenty20 tournament winners as are Sri Lanka, only one team from Sri Lanka will get into the qualifying process as against the two from England. Trinidad and Tobago will represent the West Indies while the Auckland Aces make their debut as the team from New Zealand.

The Champions League Twenty20 2011 may have an additional Indian flavor because apart from the three teams already scheduled to participate in the main tournament, the Kolkata Knight Riders have an outside chance of joining the top three teams of the IPL 4 season if they manage to beat the other teams in the Champions League Twenty20 qualifier to one of the three spots.

All of the Champions Leaguer Twenty20 2011 matches will be played virtually back to back in Hyderbad in order to complete the qualifying tournament as part of the prelude to the Champions League Twenty20 2011.

IPL 5 2012 Schedule Announced; IPL Sticks to 74 Matches

Posted by anccricket on June 30, 2011 at 5:49 AM Comments comments (0)

IPL 5 will have as many matches as IPL 4

Cricket followers are still catching their breath when they will be expected to take deeper breaths once more as the IPL 2012, in the IPL’s 5th edition, has been announced with a schedule that will see the seventy-four matches that it did during the IPL 4 season.

The IPL 5 season is expected to begin on the 4th of April with the IPL 5 final to be staged on the 27th of May, 2012. Although there will still be overlapping international bilateral series coinciding with the IPL 5 season for lack of an IPL window in the Future Tours Programme ( FTP ), the IPL 2012 edition will be go on within the stipulated period. It is bound to continue to raise some rather pertinent questions as the IPL franchisees may be forced to look into the possibility of having to readjust some of their player resources due to unavailability with national duties lined up.

Problems revolving around over lapping schedules and players’ priorities have dominated the headlines during the IPL 4 schedule, particularly with respect to the likes of Lasith Malinga and some of the other Sri Lankan cricketers as also, those of the West Indies cricketers such as Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard and more controversially, Chris Gayle. With the West Indies yet to overlap once more, one cannot expect matters to settle down completely.

However, not only is the IPL sticking to its summer schedule but also, the IPL 5 season will see the same number of matches as the IPL 4 season – seventy-four matches to be precise. While the earlier promise of ninety-four matches made to the two new IPL franchisees, Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers Kerala, were scuttled amidst the IPL 3 controversies, it is still on the higher side which the IPL and the BCCI are unwilling to relent keeping their commercial interests in mind.

One would have thought there would have been a review of the number of matches played given that the cricket fans have been resounding in their disgruntlement of the blatant exploitation of the Twenty20 format and the sport and also, coming as it did on the back of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 where national fervor received clear precedence over club interests.

But the BCCI and the IPL governing council are sticking to their stance that the drop in television ratings was only a one off scenario and that the IPL could go on despite the fact that the 4pm slots were in particular hard to sell with fans who did not want to tied down all day to cricket, which is why the Twenty20 had become lucrative. However, keeping the franchisees’ investments in mind, the BCCI obviously could not avoid the business aspect of the sport, which means either the IPL will continue to settle into a humdrum after the high of its inaugural year or will simply have to settle for the fans who will become more picky and choosy about how much and what to view. The debates meanwhile will continue to ramble along as the IPL plans for its next venture including the Champions League Twenty20.

CRICKET WORLDCUP 2011

Posted by anccricket on September 28, 2010 at 11:30 PM Comments comments (1)

The 14th edition of ICC World Cup cricket tournament will be co-hosted by three South

Asian test playing counties: Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka. ICC World Cup 2011 kicks off with the opening ceremony scheduled to take place at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur in Bangladesh on 17 February 2011. The same venue will host the opening game of the tournament between Bangladesh and India on 19 February. Out of total 49 matches in the tournament, India will host highest 29 games including a quarter final and the tournament final. Sri Lanka will organize 12 matches including a quarter final as well as a semi final, while Bangladesh will stage 8 games including 2 quarter finals. Except the opening game, India will play all of their group stage matches at home; while Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will play the group stage matches in front of their home crowd.

India will host its first match on 20 February when Kenya and New Zealand will face each other at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk in Chennai. The first game in Sri Lanka will be held on the same day at Hambantota where Sri Lankan team will take on Canada. Pakistan was one of the co-hosts of the tournament initially, but was stripped off the host status on security ground by ICC. Pakistan will play all of their matches in Sri Lanka unless they reach the semi final. If Pakistan can get into the last four of the tournament, they have to travel to India.

Tournament Venues

All of the 49 matches will be held in 13 different venues across the three countries. Except two new venues in Sri Lanka (Hambantota and Pallekele), the rest of them are test venues including India’s 8 well-known test grounds. Here, I am giving the names of the venues:

India

MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai,

Sardar Patel Stadium, Motera, Ahmedabad,

Vidarbha Cricket Association Ground, Nagpur,

Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi,

Eden Gardens, Kolkata,

M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore,

Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, Mohali, Chandigarh,

Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

Bangladesh

Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, Dhaka

Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chittagong

Sri Lanka

Hambantota,

Pallekele,

R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo

Format of the Tournament

There are 14 teams who will be participating in the tournament including 10 test playing nations and 4 associate member countries. The test playing teams have automatically qualified for the tournament, while the 4 associate members have come through the qualifying tournament held in South Africa earlier this year. The four associate members are: Ireland, Canada, Netherlands and Kenya.

The format of ICC World Cup 2011 is not same to that of the previous world cup that took place in West Indies in 2007. All of the 14 teams are divided into two groups of 7 teams each. In the group stage, each team will play against all other group members once in a round robin league system.

Group A: Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Canada and Kenya

Group B: India, South Africa, England, West Indies, Bangladesh, Ireland and Netherlands.

In 2007 world cup, there was a ‘Super Eight’ phase involving 8 teams who qualified through group stage, and four best teams from ‘Super Eight’ progressed to the semi final. However, there is no super eight phase in 2011 world cup. In stead, top four teams from each group in terms of points achieved will qualify for the quarter final. There are four quarter finals scheduled to take place on 23 March, 24 March, 25 March and 26 March. That means knock out stage starts just after the group stage. Four winners of the four quarter finals will get into the semi final of the tournament. The winners of the semi finals will meet each other in the tournament final at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on 2 April 2009.

The probable reason behind the format change is perhaps to ensure that each of the participating teams play at least 6 games even if they fail to qualify for the quarter final. Last year, two test playing nations: India and Pakistan- failed to reach the ‘Super Eight’ round and had to go back home, having played only 2 matches. The early exit of the two cricket powerhouses caused huge loss for the TV channels, sponsors as well as for those who bought time slots for TV commercials beforehand to promote their products. That is why, ICC has now ensured that each of the teams will play at least 6 games in the 2011 tournament.

Here, I am giving the full schedule of the ICC World Cup 2011 tournament:

T20 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE CRICKET 2010

Posted by anccricket on May 20, 2010 at 11:26 PM Comments comments (0)

Wanderers Stadium, one of world cricket's most famous venues, will host the Airtel Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) .

The Airtel CLT20, the grand finale of Twenty20 cricket between the world's champion teams, will start on Friday 10 September with a Group B clash between Sachin Tendulkar's Mumbai Indians and Alviro Petersen's Highveld Lions at Wanderers in Johannesburg.

All matches throughout the tournament will be broadcast in prime time in India starting at 5pm or 9pm IST. Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore will fight it out in Group B, while Chennai Super Kings have been drawn in Group A alongside the Twenty20 champions from Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

Wanderers, which has hosted some of cricket biggest matches including the 2003 ICC World Cup Final, 2007 ICC World Twenty20 Final and the 2009 IPL Final, will add another chapter to its storied history in September as teams from around the world battle to be crowned the best of the best.

Durban and Centurion have been awarded the Semi Finals on 24 and 25 September respectively, with the Final to be played at Wanderers on Sunday 26 September.

The 10 competing teams have been divided into two groups of five for a round robin phase before the top two teams from each group progress to the semi finals. Matches throughout the tournament have been evenly distributed across the four venues with each hosting at least five fixtures, including the finals.

Mumbai and the Highveld Lions have been drawn in Group B alongside South Australia's Redbacks, Royal Challengers Bangalore and West Indies'  Guyana.

Group A includes MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings (2010 IPL Champions), Australia's Twenty20 Big Bash Champions Victoria, along with the Warriors (South Africa's Pro Series Champions), Wayamba (Sri Lanka) and Central Stags (New Zealand).

Play in Group A starts on Saturday 11 September in Port Elizabeth with virtual international-strength clashes between the Warriors and Wayamba in the early match, and Chennai Super Kings and Central Stags in the late fixture in Durban.

Centurion gets its first taste of Airtel CLT20 action the following day with a blockbuster Group B double-header between the Highveld Lions and South Australia, and Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Guyana from West Indies.

Shashank Manohar, Airtel CLT20 Chairman, said:

"With 100 international stars qualified to participate through one – or more – of their Twenty20 teams, fans will be treated to daily battle between the world's best cricketers."

"Fans attending any of the matches throughout the tournament will be entertained by the highest quality Twenty20 cricket featuring South Africa's home grown heroes and world cricket's biggest and brightest stars."

A number of players have qualified to play for two or more teams, including Jacques Kallis (Warriors*, Royal Challengers Bangalore), Mark Boucher (Warriors*, Royal Challengers Bangalore), Makhaya Ntini (Warriors*, Chennai Super Kings), Kieron Pollard (South Australian Redbacks, Mumbai Indian), Dwayne Bravo (Victorian Bushrangers, Mumbai Indian) and Cameron White (Victorian Bushrangers*, Royal Challengers Bangalore).

New Zealand's Ross Taylor has become the first player in CLT20's short history to qualify for three teams, with his home team, Central Stags, and 'away' teams Victorian Bushrangers and Royal Challengers Bangalore qualifying for the event.

As was the case in 2009, if a player is selected to play for an 'away' team rather than his 'home' team (the team from the country he is eligible to represent in international cricket), the 'away' team must pay US$200,000 compensation to the 'home' team.

'Away' teams are not eligible for compensation if a player chooses to play for his 'home' team.
