MUMBAI INDIANS WIN CL T20 2011

Mumbai Indians finally landed a winner’s cheque here at MAC Stadium on Sunday. Chasing a manageable target of 140, Royal Challengers Bangalore hit the panic button way too early to be bowled out for 108.The start for RCB was a flier as usual. Tillakaratne Dilshan was pompous with his flicks and drives.

Chris Gayle barring a silken cover drive was a mute spectator as Dilshan took full toll of an erring Lasith Malinga and Abu Nechim. Malinga pressed for his third over uprooted Dilshan’s off-stump. Harbhajan trapped Gayle with a straighter one and the task suddenly looked uphill.Virat Kohli took the burden of guiding the side, but his failure to connect a slog-sweep off Harbhajan pushed RCB further back. Tweaking with the batting order did not help the IPL finalists either.KB Arun Karthik and Mohammad Kaif succumbed under mounting pressure. Malinga, Harbhajan and Yuzvendra Chahal picked wickets at regular intervals to stifle the runs and the sprightly fielding did the rest.

Earlier Mumbai did not take well to the big stage either. A start-stop effort took them to 139 and one that proved adequate in the end. Full credit to RCB for not allowing Mumbai to run away with a big total on a wicket that played considerably better.Ambati Rayudu and James Franklin resurrected the innings after Aiden Blizzard and Sarul Kanwar left early. For a major portion of the partnership the duo paid good attention to smaller details. Rayudu’s error against the innocuous trundlers of Raju Bhatkal brought RCB back at a point when Mumbai was looking to gain control.Suryakumar Yadav stepped the scoring from the moment he took crease. A chance run out in favour of Vettori changed the complexion of the game. In the next over Franklin was found short of his crease and the two quick wickets and an error in judgement by umpire Kumar Dharmasena in adjudging Harbhajan Singh lbw, dimmed the prospects of a competitive total from Mumbai. A further rush of wickets towards the end saw MI letting slip from a decent position to be bowled out for 139.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE CRICKET 2011

The Champions League Twenty20 2011 comes with a twist in that there is the precursor of the Champions League Twenty20 2011 qualifier tournament, the schedule for which was recently announced.

Slated for the 19th to 21st of September, the CLT20 2011 Qualifier will allow three of the six participating teams to move further to the CLT20 2011 main draw. While England have yet to finalize the Twenty20 tournament winners as are Sri Lanka, only one team from Sri Lanka will get into the qualifying process as against the two from England. Trinidad and Tobago will represent the West Indies while the Auckland Aces make their debut as the team from New Zealand.

The Champions League Twenty20 2011 may have an additional Indian flavor because apart from the three teams already scheduled to participate in the main tournament, the Kolkata Knight Riders have an outside chance of joining the top three teams of the IPL 4 season if they manage to beat the other teams in the Champions League Twenty20 qualifier to one of the three spots.

All of the Champions Leaguer Twenty20 2011 matches will be played virtually back to back in Hyderbad in order to complete the qualifying tournament as part of the prelude to the Champions League Twenty20 2011.

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS WIN IPL 4 2011

A clinical Chennai Super Kings clinched their second Indian Premier League title in a row with a 58-run thrashing of Royal Challengers Bangalore in a lop-sided final on Saturday.Opener Murali Vijay cracked 95 runs off just 52 balls to help the defending champions pile up 205-5 before Ravichandran Ashwin removed Bangalore's openers early, ensuring a fine win for the hosts at a packed Chidambaram Stadium.League-toppers Bangalore, who were seeking their maiden IPL title, folded up at 147-8 off 20 overs. The home team owed their win to Vijay whose record 159-run stand for the first wicket with Australian Michael Hussey (63) set the platform for a winning total after captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni elected to bat first.Their stand surpassed the 155-run partnership between Adam Gilchrist and Venkatsai Laxman against Mumbai in the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008.

Bangalore's chase was derailed early with off-spinner Ashwin (3-16) getting rid of the dangerous Chris Gayle for a duck in the very first over.Gayle, who still finished as the highest run-getter with 608 runs from 12 innings, offered an outside edge which was snapped up by Dhoni behind the wickets.Gayle's dismissal triggered a collapse with Bangalore losing their next six wickets inside 11 overs to be reduced to 70-6, a situation from which they could never really recover.Saurabh Tiwary offered some resistance with an unbeaten 42 but the other Bangalore batsmen simply caved in under pressure.Vijay, pointed out as the weak link in the Chennai line-up after an indifferent run with the bat in the tournament, decided to make amends at the big stage, unleashing six sixes and four fours in his blazing knock.

Hussey also impressed, hitting three sixes and as many boundaries in his 45-ball innings before holing out to Abhimanyu Mithun near the boundary ropes off left-arm spinner Syed Mohammad.Vijay, who seemed to struggle in hot and humid conditions during the later part of his innings, missed out on a well-deserved century when he offered a simple catch to captain Daniel Vettori off paceman Sreenath Aravind.Aravind struck again off the very next ball to remove Dhoni, caught off a full toss by Virat Kohli after making 22 which included two sixes in one over by Gayle.Gayle also picked up two wickets in two balls, sending back Albie Morkel and Suresh Raina in the 20th over with his wily off-breaks.

INDIA WIN CRICKET WORLD CUP 2011

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni struck a dramatic six to bring the World Cup to India on Saturday after Sri Lanka had threatened to ruin their party.

Dhoni finished with 91 not out as India, chasing a target of 275, won by six wickets with 10 balls to spare at the Wankhede Stadium to become the first country to win the World Cup on home soil.

They are also only the third side to win batting second, a feat that seemed beyond them when Lasith Malinga dismissed both openers in his first four overs.

It's good to win. That was really pushing me in this game. It's been a memorable 35 days that we've spent together and this is the goal we wanted to achieve, Dhoni said at the victory presentation.

Left-hander Gautam Gambhir stayed calm among the storm to score a masterly 97, sharing a fourth-wicket partnership of 109 from 118 balls with man-of-the-match Dhoni. Yuvraj Singh, who was named man-of-the-tournament, finished on 21 not out.
